@PatBateman17
@Medicamecanica3/30/2024, 9:06 AMI’m in Costa del Sol in FF7 Rebirth love the variety of things to do with meaningful rewards and all. Feel like I’m going to be at it for another month at this rate, but not sure!
Also playing Ender Lilies now as my switch game. Fun Metroidvania where you play as a defenseless little girl with a bunch of ghost buddies. that witch boss was hard as heck. Hopefully not much more punishing than that.
login to replyslimeybear@slimerybear6663/30/2024, 2:19 PMGame does have quite a few side bosses that can be pretty challenging if I remember right. RiffRaff said the same before and I agree that while I liked the game that final area felt pretty annoyingly aritifical bullshit diffculity and I just dropped the game at it and treated it as done.
login to reply RiffRaff@RiffRaff3/30/2024, 9:39 AMSup all! Played a good bit of Infinite Wealth and Trails to Azure. Will be back to FF7R2 today. That’s about it. All are outstanding games and will be my rotation for quite a bit as I’ll probably do most of the side content. Have a great weekend and holiday for those who celebrate it!
login to reply Justin Stewart@Seymour-Demonica3/30/2024, 9:59 AMDabbled in a lot lately, but it’s mostly been Stardew Valley and Scarlet Tower.
The former, I’m still playing. The latter, I dropped for lack of variety in the enemies/stages and the mostly derivative take on Vampire Survivors. It sounds better, looks better and even plays a little better, but these clones are a dime a dozen and I could just as easily be playing yet more Halls of Torment, Boneraiser Minions or 20 Minutes Till Dawn. Good game, though. Were it not for the hundreds of other games like it to come out since Vampire Survivors, we could make room for both.
Other than that, Stardew Valley has kept my attention. A little grindier than expected, but charming. I feel if I get hooked on this at all, it’ll be a real slow burn to that point.
Happy to see you finished ECHO and enjoyed it! Does the “Legacy Mode” you unlock upon completion interest you? I’ll probably end up doing that at some point in the future.
login to replyRiffRaff@RiffRaff3/30/2024, 10:01 AMWas eyeing those VSlikes you mentioned. Any worth my time or should I just stick with VS. HoT looks cool with its art style. 20 Min also seems neat.
login to replyJustin Stewart@Seymour-Demonica3/30/2024, 10:15 AMHard to say which one is best.
If you want something closer to Vampire Survivors, I’d say 20 Minutes Till Dawn. The wealth of content is trimmed, but I feel the build crafting is way more interesting there. You aren’t just picking and choosing skills or passives for the sake of visual variety by the mid-point (which is around where, I think, your choices barely matter in VS), your builds will have actual strengths, weaknesses and practicality most of the way through a run. Lots of interesting character classes to jump from as well.
The other two are their unique brand of VS. If the audio/visuals of Halls of Torment speak to you because you’re a fan of ye olden Diablo, jump on that. It channels that era of gaming perfectly, with none of the rust. If you like pet or necromancy builds, Boneraiser Minions is a dream and has its own audio/visual charms.
I think Halls of Torment does ARPG + Vampire Survivors considerably better (from what I’ve played), but there’s also Soulstone Survivors if that combination of elements interests you.
login to replyRiffRaff@RiffRaff3/30/2024, 12:31 PMAwesome! The all sound interesting but may go for HoT first because old man gamer. Thanks for the info!
login to replyslimeybear@slimerybear6663/30/2024, 2:20 PMYou give that Vampire Surviors Deep Rock Galatic like spin off game a go? Seems like one of the better received vampire survior like games.

login to reply Kerrik52@Kerrik523/30/2024, 10:13 AMDark Cloud 2 all day ’erry day. Been a long time since I’ve played a classical sequel like this where every single thing is better by a large margin. It’s a good feeling.
login to replyLord Spencer@Lord-Spencer3/31/2024, 11:04 AMI loved Dark Cloud 2 back in the day, then I lost the memory card and never completed it.
login to replyKerrik52@Kerrik523/31/2024, 2:26 PMFair. The pacing is pretty glacial and there are a lot of side activity time traps, so I can’t imagine restarting a playthrough.
login to reply Lord Spencer@Lord-Spencer3/30/2024, 10:39 AMRarely, but predictably, I would play a game and become so completely addicted and absorbed by it that I would ignore all the other games I am playing (or I am supposed to start playing) and fully dedicate myself to it. I go into an almost trance-like state where I think about the game every waking moment.
Usually, it happens when I play Strategy games, and I think that’s by design. Sid Meir’s Civilization serious is famous for having a “just one more turn” feeling, and that happened to me when playing each game in that series. This time, it is happening with Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening; the ONLY game I played last week.
There is just something addictive about all the meters usually being filled in these games. Every decision you make affects how fast those meters get filled, and then there are the macro decisions that direct how your empire progresses as a whole.
Just one more turn to see the impact of that policy you authorized.
Just one more turn to see the result of your assault on the neighboring warlord.
Just one more turn to see how your regent is performing in the war they started.
Just one more turn comparing the statistics of your army compared to the strongest clans in the land.
It just completely paralyzed all my thoughts last week, sticking my mind back to the 16th century where I do a SWAT analysis on keeping my alliance with the Takeda going.
Then, I am back into the real world, leading a reasonably boring life that is (thankfully) devoid of battles, subversions, hundreds of officers to juggle, and castles to invade. That is until I come back to the reality of politics in my work and life, and realize that the thing I love most about Strategy games is the degree of influence and predictability we have in them.
Check out my latest PS1 Review of Wild Arms 2, an improved sequel to the early PS1 classic, albeit one with an infamously bad localization. Still, it is worth playing today.
Also, check out my blog where I ask Where the Hell is Wild Arms? A retrospective blog where I try to figure out why the Wild Arms series died, and explain why it would be great to have it back.
Finally, check out my weekly updates on the games I am playing now. The information in brackets is how long I have been playing the games and how close they are to the checkpoint that decides whether I continue with them.
-Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening (Switch): This is the latest game in Koei’s famous duology of Strategy games (Nobunaga’s Ambition & Romance of the Three Kingdoms) which I usually buy whenever a localized version is released. Surprisingly, every new game in these franchises makes big changes to the gameplay formula even if it preserves the setting and characters.
In Awakening, the focus is on leaving things to the many officers you employ, whether it is giving them a fief to develop, or a whole province to govern. Every decision in the game is linked to the strength and abilities of your many retainers.
Battles are more involved than they were in Sphere of Influence, and that’s a plus. However, there isn’t a mode where you can roleplay as an officer and develop your reputation across the land.
For the first time ever, I am actually playing as the titular Nobunaga. As such, I am actually slowing down my conquest in order to roleplay the real history. This will also give some of the other powerful clans the chance to put up more of a fight when I eventually start rolling into their territory.
In general, the Koei strategy games are very good but are rarely as brilliant as something like the Civilization games. However, I am very familiar with the history and characters of both franchises and like them enough that I always love going back to them again and again. Every time, I am disappointed by some changes while appreciative of others.
Now, I need to go back to conquer the Takeda who are finally open to conquest after the death of the mighty Shingen. Next week’s update will be a more normal one.
login to reply@lewness3/30/2024, 12:13 PMI remember loving Wild Arms 5 quite a lot and then lost steam for some reason. Was it because of Persona 4? I don’t quite remember. What I do remember though is me thinking I should try a Wild Arms game again. Is Wild Arms 2 a good start? My Miyoo could use some action
login to replyLord Spencer@Lord-Spencer4/6/2024, 8:13 PMWild Arms 2 is good if you can get past the shoddy localization. However, due to its shorter length, I would recommend Wild Arms 1 over it.
Mostly, I would recommend Wild Arms: Alter Code F, which is the remake of the first game, but I am not sure how accessible that game is nowadays.
login to reply@BurningYggdrassil3/30/2024, 3:58 PMJust one more, one more, one more turn. Love in an empire. Loving it up when it’s going doooown!
login to reply RLZ@R-L-Z3/30/2024, 10:48 AMHi ! I hope the shit stuff won’t be too shitty for you pat. My week’s been not much to talk about. The weekend will be all about Easter chores festivities. One thing that I’ve been stupidly happy about and that I didn’t detail over in TGIF is a cheap fleece jacket that I got at a discount store yesterday. It looks about okay and is the most practical thing ever with many pockets and a hood. I’ve had an Eider one for over two decades that got all shiny from wear at the elbows and more recently a Uniqlo one that has been in a few painting incidents. Both had no hood and the Uniqlo one only had open pockets. I guess the design of the new on is a bit of a step down (it’s supposedly gardening gear too, with little shovels hanging from the zips …) but it’s so practical ! We’ll see how it behaves over time. Yeah … I realize that I’m gushing about the blandest piece of clothing possible, a fleece jacket.
Anyway, games ! So this week mostly Splatoon 3. A relative lot of it to the exclusion of other stuff. It was nice. My team didn’t win the Splatfest last weekend but I still did ok. A good amount of new gear and locker decorations, made good money on Salmon Run and did ok in battles. Saw a few stages I hadn’t before. The mall one is interesting with its underpasses and stuff the airport has some fun gimmicks too. One thing I regret though is participating in a couple of those pro clamshell matches without knowing the rules. I wasn’t much of an asset for the two matches and I still don’t know the rules. 😅 Otherwise it’s the usual puzzle games and some GBC Mario Golf.
Have a fine weekend all !
login to reply @lewness3/30/2024, 12:10 PMHello again! In the Roman Catholic world, this week is the Holy Week so you’re supposed to do a bit of reflection and stuff. I did do a bit of that, but it’s mostly a couple of rest days for me which I spent either sleeping, chilling with a book and some coffee, or playing some video games.
- Now at Chapter 8 in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (PS5). If Costa del Sol wasn’t enough, here’s a (probably) even bigger “fun” area to go around and play, like, 10 hours worth of minigames haha. The Tifa workout minigame wasn’t as horrible as I had expected, the 3rd song for the piano minigame wasn’t too bad too (Barret’s Theme), it had some syncopated beats but as long you memorize it and the stick controls play nice you’re good.
- Finished the first major boss of Unicorn Overlord (NSW) and now 2 new regions have been opened up and I’m still having fun with it. I’ve also started having 4-man teams and it looks like the power curve is starting to ramp (curve?) up.
- For a quick palate cleanser, I did a quick clear of Venba (PC) on Gamepass. It’s a very simple cooking game with a focus on Indian cuisine and story that quite tugs strongly on your heartstrings. Took a second go at some chapters (with a guide) to get those remaining Xbox cheevos. Overall it took at most 2.5 hours to get absolutely everything. Definitely got me in the mood for some Indian food that time but I did that at 2AM so I think I settled that night with some Mcdonald’s haha.
- More shenanigans with Sons of the Forest (PC/SD) with us having encountered some major story beats . Got the shotgun which was a godsend for some of the more intense night raids. We’ve also started prettying up the place multiple floors, a launch pad for the glider, a zipline network, stone walls and even a parking lot for all the unicycles and golf carts we were amassing. I swear our play session is 45% plot advancement, 45% cozy game, 10% laughing at the absurd golf cart physics
- Started the Pepper Grinder Demo just today! So far so good.
- I recently got Balatro on Steam with the Card game sale. I’m afraid of the damage it will do to my work on other games.
Also finished book #4 for this year with Yukiko Motoya’s The Lonesome Bodybuilder. I swear, Japanese short stories can be a mixed bag. Some stories can leave with you with the most profound thoughts - others are like a 3-year old narrating their day by stitching together 5 distinct occurrences into a single short story and the main gist is, well, all those things happened. That one was a 3/5 for me. I got another Murakami short story collection upcoming but I’ll pad it with something else first.
Enjoy the weekend!
login to reply Streetmagik3@Streetmagik3/30/2024, 12:32 PMOn chapter 12 in Infinite Wealth and still very much enjoying it. Started Armored Core 6 and I really like what I’ve played so far. I should be able to finish IW this week and I’m looking forward to getting back into AC6 full time. That’s it for games… and really no movies or TV either. Sad fact of coming back to work from vacation!
login to reply @D-Volt3/30/2024, 1:21 PMI’m still making my way through Dragon’s Dogma 2, but when I’m not playing it my attention has been absolutely captured by Nobunaga’s Ambition Sphere of Influence: Ascension. I’ve been a huge Nobunaga’s Ambition fan since the SNES days and every once in a while an entry in the series captures me and I end up playing hours and hours of it. Such is the case this week.
When I’m not playing that, I’m either playing Balatro or the demo for Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, which are both two sides of the same coin. I love deck builders that put a twist on classic card games. Deck builders for Texas Hold’em and Blackjack? Yes, please!
login to replyslimeybear@slimerybear6663/30/2024, 2:24 PMNot much of a deck builder rogue lite fan but love One Step To Eden which is basicaly Mega Man battlenetwork combat system mixed with bullet hell and deck building like systems in real time.
Also a mention to pretty cool Rungore
login to replyLord Spencer@Lord-Spencer3/31/2024, 11:09 AMIt sure is a coincidence to have two Dtoiders playing a Nobunaga’s Ambition game at the same time.
I am playing Awakening right now, which I am addictednto but I am unsure if I like it more than Sphere of Influence or not.
How is Ascension different from Sphere of Influence? I played over 100 hours of The base game and I was unsure if I should die my toes again into that same pond
login to reply@D-Volt3/31/2024, 2:17 PMThe main differences between Sphere of Influence and Ascension are numerous. The battles have been changed, there’s a new Osaka Campaign, it includes all the DLC scenarios from SoI, and it has a new officer mode that lets you start as a retainer and slowly rise to the level of Daimyo. There’s a lot of other tweaks and new features too, but those are the biggest ones. On the whole though, SoI is better than Ascension in my opinion.
The opposing AI is worse in Ascension, being unwilling to effectively develop their fief to the level you will, inevitably giving you an unfair advantage that’s hard for the AI to overcome in the late game. The developers screwed up and somehow bows are better than muskets in Ascension. The officer mode sounds cool, but since it’s nothing more than just slowly unlocking access to more diplomatic and economic options, it ends up feeling more like an interactive tutorial mode that slowly opens up into the main game. Really fun the first time around, but can feel much too casual to dive into again. Activating events is bizarrely difficult in Ascension, so if you enjoy the challenge of playing a campaign as historically accurate as possible to get certain events to trigger, it’s inconsistent in the strangest ways.
Also, the ability to create Houses (giving one of your lords a number of castles and officers to control as they like) to lower micromanagement is still here, but unlike SoI you can’t freely redistribute and move officers within those houses. You’re basically reliant on the AI to intelligently move their officers between castles and use them in the best way possible and they NEVER do that. House lords will constantly beg you to give them your best officers and then squirrel them away in the most well protected area of the map to do meager investment work and minor castle construction. Meanwhile they’ll have several castles on the frontlines without any officers to protect and/or develop them.
I’m somewhat nitpicking here since I’ve played a lot of Sphere of Influence as well as a number of different Nobunaga’s Ambition games over the years. Those are: -Nobunaga’s Ambition (SNES) -Nobunaga’s Ambition: Lord of Darkness (SNES) -Nobunaga’s Ambition: Iron Triangle (PS2) -Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence (PS4 & PC) -Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence Ascension (PC) -Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi (PS4, very tempted to rebuy it on PC)
So, I think SoI is the objectively better game, but Ascension is still fun in its own right. I already played hundreds of hours of SoI, so I decided to take Ascension for a spin for some variety. I like it, but I would definitely choose SoI if I had to choose just one.
I might rebuy Taishi for PC at some point, since I found its focus on economics somewhat novel. Unfortunately, Koei Tecmo were too lazy to translate the Power-Up Kit to English and it’s more rudimentary than SoI in many ways, so I’ll wait for a steeper sale. I might be waiting a long time knowing how notoriously stingy they are with sales, never going below 40% off. There’s a reason I still haven’t bought Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires yet.
I didn’t love the idea of Awakening taking more autonomy away from the player and relying even more heavily on the AI than ever before, so I think I’ll wait a while longer before picking it up. In the meantime, I’m just hoping the upcoming Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake turns out alright.
login to replyLord Spencer@Lord-Spencer4/6/2024, 8:10 PMWow, thanks for the detailed answer.
I loved Spehre of Influence, and while Awakening is not hitting the same highs, I am having fun with it. I don’t think the game takes as much autonomy as you might think, since you could still choose to micromanage things (if you have the funds), but it does remove a lot of the bust work. In that way, I think I might finish more games now than any other Nobunaga’s Ambition game.
I am also hoping RotTK8R turns out alright.
login to reply Dreggsao@Dreggsao3/30/2024, 1:38 PMSnow Runner - A game about getting from A to B very slowly if at all. So basically the same genre as QWOP, Getting Over It and the upcoming Baby Steps. We call it “Foddylikes”
Balatro - It’s easy to see why so many people are enthralled by Balatro. It has cheap items that instantly give you several times their price back in the item store for the instant gratification. And more importantly it has multipliers for the multiplier TAKE THAT TONY HAWK.
Prince of Persia - bottom title - Rayman Origins and Legends are better 2D platformers than what Nintendo released around the time. That is an undeniable fact and if you disagree I don’t listen because I am childish like that. Prince of Persia - The Guy Who Met The Prince One Fucking Time And Now Can’t Shut Up About It is better than any Metroid. Ubisoft Montpellier is too good for Ubisoft. Nintendo should buy them and rename them to Nintendo Ubisoft Montpellier.
login to replyslimeybear@slimerybear6663/30/2024, 2:26 PMI do think it stands out to Nintendos and Ubisoft different design focus that as far as I am aware Prince of Persia Lost Crown has all that modern day throw a crafting and loot/item gear system because I guess its impossible for any modern day AAA game to not have that while Metroid Dread pretty much has none of them.
I am guessing Ubisoft or the like pushed to have that shit in the game since Rayman origins and Legends had nothing like that really.
login to reply @QueenNioiclin3/30/2024, 1:47 PMSorry to hear about the crappy time ahead, Pat. Hope things get better soon!
For the first time since I bought BG3, I haven’t played even a second of it this week! Since I was without my laptop for most of the week, however, I did play tons of…
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Ashrah reached the maximum level for Fighter, and Sareena is now a top-tier Thief too. Thief has so many great skills, including the two “master” ones! It’s only a shame that the AI is fucking stupid and constantly gets the Pawn’s life down soon after rest because of the self-igniting skill, only using the shadow step thing afterwards. I should try to change the inputs, maybe that will help. Still, Sareena is quite strong!
I’ve also tried the Warrior, Mystic Spearhand, and Archer Vocations. I really didn’t click with Warrior, both for myself and for the Pawns I hired. Clown takes forever to land a single strike, and it doesn’t even seem that powerful. Mystic Spearhand was… all right. I expected to like it more. Perhaps I need to unlock more skills, but so far, it isn’t as cool as I expected. As an Archer, however, I’m having a great time! Can’t wait to unlock Magick Archer! (And Wayfarer because I’m definitely building a Fighter/Mage type. Maybe throw Archer in there as well for the craic).
As much fun as I’m having with the gameplay, two story elements are proving very disappointing. One, there are no dialogue options in this game!!! So many times already an NPC asked me something or said something that would require a reply, and either the conversation ended or the NPC kept talking by themselves. I was expecting each Vocation to have exclusive lines, maybe some exclusive lines for human/beastren too, but… nothing. And it feels so empty.
My second issue kind of ties in with the first: I don’t feel like my actions matter. Yeah, I’m the Arisen, woo-hoo, but unless I’m missing something, everything is so linear. Sure, I can choose to not accept a quest, to not help the kid, but that’s all. I’ve reached Battahl, and so far, from what I can tell, none of my actions had any impact aside from the linear progression of the story. And even if they wanted a more linear story, why not give me dialogue options?!
Also, maybe BG3 spoiled me with its top-tier writing, but holy shit, the quests and the NPCs in that game are sooooo much more engaging than what Capcom has here. I think a great example is Sister Elena from the church in the Slums (light spoilers here): you uncover her scheme, arrest her, and then when you go ask for her help to decipher a message, she welcomes you as if you were best friends, and I was like ???
And I gotta say the enemy repetition is starting to get annoying. Oh well, it is what it is, I suppose.
login to replySilva / Galechronos@Cyclone-Joker3/30/2024, 2:04 PMMost of mystic spearhand’s attack skills are kinda whatever but it gets a really strong shield skill with almost no cast time or stamina cost, so you can go ham, shield, repeat for entire fights. I love it.

Still chipping away at FFVII Rebirth, of course! Doing some things in Junon, currently. But I haven’t had a chance to pick it back up since Monday; I need a day to just play this game and do nothing else, dammit.
Picked up Rogue Legacy 2 again yesterday and it’s always a good time! Very easy to lose track of time for “just one more run.”
Been FLYING through my read of Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson; it’s so fucking good, y’all. Maybe 150 pages from the end and I think I’ll need to snap up the next book soon after, as opposed to waiting several months like I did before.
Anyway, it’s my last day of work before a nice three day weekend. My wife’s birthday is tomorrow and my store is closed for Zombie Jesus; we’re getting dinner tonight after I’m off and then doing an escape room with a group of friends. Tomorrow should be calm and relaxing, and then we’ll have Monday to tromp around town with our kiddo which will be a great change of pace.
Take care this weekend, everyone!

It may have, I got it on PS5 though. I’ve never played MM so I’ve been playing the original. I really need to focus and beat it, it’s the only none main console Zelda I’ve never played all the way through.

I played MM on Wii VC but I missed the N64 controller too much. SO either the original or 3DS for me (or in VR one day). I get it gets annoying with all the repetition but from what I understand it’s very satisfactory by the end. Gives a sense of achievement I guess.
