Balatro update 1.0.1c is coming, and it will make the game even better
I’m officially addicted to the rogue-like poker deck builder Balatro. I’ve clocked in 90 hours in the game since its launch across Xbox and Steam, but for now, I’m completely shelving my Xbox playthrough. Why? The experimental build on Steam lets you play the upcoming patch 1.0.1c, which plays like a completely different game. An even better Balatro, and now I can’t go back. If you’re playing on Xbox right now, it would be a great time to take a break and wait for the patch to officially roll out on all platforms “in a about a week”. It’s THAT good, and it will be a whole lot easier to get that Completionist++ achievement if you’re an achievement hunter.
The best part of Balatro or Hades isn’t permadeath, its synergies between your abilities and boons. Menu

Most games let you save your progress. Roguelikes don’t. Most games give you more than one life. Roguelikes don’t. Most games let you start over at the most recent checkpoint. Roguelikes don’t. Most games let you carry your gear forward with you. Roguelikes don’t. When I made those early forays into the genre after getting back into gaming in 2016, I mostly thought of roguelikes as “those games that are really hard.”
The roguelike Balatro captured the hearts and minds of roguelike lovers and card sharks everywhere, and it’s a good placebo to combat gambling addiction.
It’s an enthralling game to watch unfold as a player or a spectator, utilizing progression and survival in a similar vein to the recent trend of auto-battlers, and to great effect.
It’s not just a race to the proverbial top, but an endorphin rush that runs parallel to the type of screen-shaking, integer-breaking, visually glitchy haven that titles like Vampire Survivors and Army of Ruin execute brilliantly. Of course, it works a little bit differently in Balatro, but the goal remains the same regardless: Make the number go up.

Trade a Joker for a hand.
The Black Deck in Balatro gives you an additional Joker slot but takes one away from your maximum hand size. Instead of five Jokers, you can have up to six, and instead of four hands, you have three.
Screenshot: PC Invasion With Black Deck’s nuance in mind, the key to winning with it is to invest in the best Jokers you can find. Since you have one less hand, you need to rely on your Jokers to add Mult and Chips directly to each hand. The more ways Jokers give you Mult and Chips, the better.
Hack is an uncommon Joker that provides a way to retrigger low-rank cards, those being 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s. It is similar to Sock and Buskin, providing retriggers if specific ranks are played, but affects more total ranks due to the ranks it affects giving fewer chips. Abandoned Deck makes it…

You can play 5 cards even if not all of them count towards the points. e.g. if you play 2 pairs, you can play a 5th card as well. This is a useful way to discard some cards from your hand without using a discard.
The jokers at the top of the screen apply their effects in order from left to right. So e.g. if you have a “+4 multiplier” joker, and then a “x1.5 multiplier”, you probably want the +4 to the left and the x1.5 to the right, so it multiplies a higher number, etc.

Ride The Bus, Supernova and Green Joker are all S tier high stakes jokers if you get them in ante 1/2, maybe 3 if your other jokers can pull their weight for a bit as they get going, you just pivot into playing “a pair” and then win. Then you run into the needle and die but that’s Balatro. I dislike green joker because I discard a lot but if you pair it with Burglar then it’s S+ tier. The Spectral card that gives you a rare joker but sets your money to $0, does it always give you the joker that gives you a free spectral card if you score a straight flush? Because that might be the most useless joker in the game. Fun interaction I had the other day was I was at $-12 with the credit card and I got the wraith spectral that gives a random rare joker and sets money to 0 so I got a free rare joker and $12. No, it gives you a random rare joker. I’ve unlocked plasma deck but it’s so weird. Really? Because I feel like the last few time’s I’ve picked it I’ve gotten that useless straight flush free spectral card joker. I keep reading that it’s OP but I don’t really get it either. Tried at first to pump chips as much as possible since they’re easier to come by, but then there isn’t multipliers for chips so I guess it’s still best to go after x-mult. Yeah, I was gonna mention this too. Pretty good way out of debt. I’m just wondering if it also works with The Ox (most played hand sets money to 0). there isn’t multipliers for chips Can someone explain what this card means? Like…aren’t all the cards below 52? Yeah, the game has a bad habit of creating OP synergies and then trying to balance them by including hard counters against them. It does give you some outs, so it’s not a total lost cause, but it could also just… make them less OP in the first place. Man, I am having trouble beating Gold difficulty on the Checkered deck. I wanted to get that out of the way because it’s “the flush deck”. Either I am doing something wrong or having bad luck. Any tips for that deck? Don’t feel obligated to build around flushes every time. Well, that’s an inherent feature of card builders imho. In Slay the Spire is super hard to modify a chip damage deck if you get Time Eater as a boss. And at high ascension levels you matemathically get poo poo on by early minibosses if you don’t take strong offensive cards. If anything I feel more in control with Balatro than in any other game. Even if you can’t reroll the boss, emergency Joker reshuffles are manageable if you have spare cash. I have ditched multiple pareidolia decks because of an ante 7 Mark or Plant but still managed to salvage the run enough to get the win. Then I got demolished in endless mode because it became an unoptimized garbage deck, but hey, same thing as The Heart check in StS. Can someone explain what this card means? Like…aren’t all the cards below 52? Isn’t the highest value technically like, 13, the king? I assume I am misunderstanding this somehow? Really? How the gently caress is anyone getting to MAXINT, I get ratfucked on green stakes ante 2 half the time. As others have said, it’s taking about the number of cards in your deck. The reason it’s phrased in this way is because other cards that say “+x per card added to your deck” actually only count cards added after you buy the joker and isn’t impacted by removing cards. This one works per card removed no matter when, but it’s cancelled out by adding cards. It took me a second to parse too because you think, surely it would just say “per card removed Steel cards + red seals + lots of retrigger bullshit. That’s really the only way to get anywhere once you hit endless.

(Image credit: Focus Entertainment)To unlock the best Curse of the Dead Gods blessings, you first need to die (sorry) so you can return to the Main Hall, then interact with the central stele to enter the Underworld. This will present you with the Blessings screen, where you can spend Crystal Skulls to unlock these passive abilities. Crystal Skulls are fairly commonly found on your adventures, with regular enemies having a low chance of dropping one while Elite enemies always leave one behind, while the tougher Champions and Bosses will always drop at least 10 after defeat. Crystal Skulls can also be earned for completing rooms in Events, with a bonus awarded for clearing the entire Event.
